I read with interest the recent research article by Monica A. McHenry. In the article, McHenry cites me (personal communications, May 15, 1997 and June 4, 1997) regarding a formula for converting velopharyngeal (VP) resistance measurements to VP area data. Because this formula may appear novel to readers of the Journal, I would like to comment further on its origin and application.
The formula used by McHenry to estimate VP orifice areas based on her pressure-flow data was:
