Online assessment methods are used in the research context to evaluate cognitive operations and systems as they function in real time. Such measures can reveal facets of cognitive-linguistic representation and processing that are obscured by the offline or postperceptual measures traditionally used for clinical purposes. Although online methods rarely are used clinically, it is important for designing intervention plans that clinicians gain an awareness of such methods and what they tell us about our clients. As such, the following three papers, solicited and reviewed as a set, present arguments and evidence to illustrate the implications of online techniques for clinical practice with adult clients who have neurologic disorders of language and cognition. The clinician-researchers who wrote these papers were asked to concentrate their data and discussion on different populations, with the particular task of detailing the clinical importance of online measures. Shapiro and colleagues consider adults who are aging normally and those with aphasia; Kempler and associates focus on patients with probable Alzheimer’s disease; and Tompkins and Baumgaertner discuss adults who have communicative disorders because of right hemisphere brain damage.
